Gel Print

I recently discovered that gel print is a thing. Late to the party I guess, it’s been around for years. The gel plates are freakishly expensive, but I found a DIY video on YouTube academy.

The option to do image transfers intrigued me and I tried it with the instructions in this video.

The first attempt with a glossy magazine image was promising…

The second attempt with a less glossy magazine (Geo) was less clear but visually interesting…

The trials with laser copys were much more challenging. I tried dozens of techniques, adjusting timing and chosing different colors.

After 3 hours I got one half decent bookmark out of this. It was frustrating and challening but also fun. I love the new options this technique offers and will sure continue to explore.

The Library of Congress uploads tons of old open source images on Flickr. Some real gems in there. Go check it out!
